Alternator or Generator?

Am I correct in thinking a 1954 Super C would have come from the factory with a generator, and not an alternator. If the generator has been discarded can you still buy a rebuilt or reconditioned one, and are they really expensive? Thanks in advance, I'm thinking of starting another project, and I'm wondering about the cost of putting the old girl back to original. Also, don't share any of this information with my wife, I don't have my current project out of the shop yet.
