Dave H, you are correct, the SMTA w/o the TA used the same housings as the one with. It even had the bracket for the TA handle to attach to. The SMTA w/o TA had the round decal that said SMTA, but didnot have the "flag" at the bottom that said "Torque Amplified". In '54 IH also made the reg SM. It's easy to distinquish as the SMTA had about 4" of clearance between the gas tank & the steering column whereas the SM's gas tank almost touched the column.
