Sarge; Even though you are asking whether it will hold, I get the sense that you have confidence it will. Go with your gut. As you said, now you know what to look for or to keep in mind if you ever hear more sounds. These trannies can be quite forgiving as I have seen many tractors torn apart here at the salvage yard which had the ball bearing keepers missing but were still being used. It's hard to imagine when you look at it having all the balls together means the top half of the bearing is open between the races. Of course I doubt they were working the tractor very hard; probably just as transporting things or pto useage.
