Remove the soft plug from one side of the casting at the bottom of the gear shift. There is a pin that goes through the shifter that has to be punched out of the casting so you can lift the shifter up out of the casting. Once it is out, use a light to look down into hole and you'll see the shifting rails. Using a long heavy duty screw driver align all the rails so the large notch in each rail is lined up even and in the center of the hole. Now look at the very bottom of the gear shift shaft. You'll see how worn and rounded off it is. You can build it back up with weld and then dress it up on the grinder to prevent this from happening again. If you are unsure of how much add to it or grind off, take it to your Case/NH dealer shop and have them correct it. Put the shifter back into the slot, push the pin back in and then install the soft plugs on both sides of the casting to hold the pin in.
