Quite a bit of white smoke from a 454D (or any older diesel) is common at start up. You will probably also see some white or grey smoke even after running a while. That is normal according to the IH manual. To be 100% sure, you really need to see what it does under a load when fully warmed. My 454D has a recent rebuild on the engine and still makes a little smoke, even after warming up. When running under a load, either loader work or bush hogging, there is not a trace of smoke. I probably need to ckeck my thermostat. As far as cost, $6800 is a good price for a 454D and loader in good condition here in PA, but prices always seem a little high here.
