From my H Parts Catalog TC-27E. "(1)Part Numbers. In cases where the part number suffix letters have been advanced, the new part will replace the old unless otherwise indicated. For example: Cylinder head gasket 43 988 DF will work for 43 988D, DA, DB,DC and DE." "(4) Partial Assemblies and Complete Assemblies. You will find that of the some numbers are followed by the letters "X" or "Y". The suffix letter "X" indicates an assembly of parts which may be a either a partial or a complete assembly. The suffix letter "Y", in nearly all cases, indicates a complete assembly. For example: 43 917 DAX Exhaust Valve Lever, L.H. with Bushing is a partial assembly, whereas 43 917 DAY represents the foregoing with Adjusting Screw and Nut 'added', and is a complete assembly." Hope this offers some enlightenment, Sid.
