In addition to the lack-of-maintenance situation, lots of them have been tinkered with to produce 1/3 or more additional power through overbore kits and high compression pistons. When the farmer got that much more power, he usually put it to work, and that meant pulling bigger loads than the engineers planned on. I've got a '49M that had the rear end completely rebuilt several years ago using 560 bearings everywhere they would fit. It withstood many years of hard use after that.
