I, unlike so many other friends of mine, was deprived a farming background as a kid, so the bond to these machines is a little different for me. But i'd have to say that the "H"'s are my favorites. I spent alot of time working on my '40 H, and there is almost a personal bond with it. I feel like i've somehow failed it if I flood it out trying to start it on a cold day (another thing I learned NOT to do.) My H seems to want to run, but kind of likes to be finessed into starting. It's still on 6V, and doesn't like to be cranked hard. It just won't start that way. It likes to be bumped over, one rev at a time, the way a hand crank would start her. Starts every time that way. Just got to remember patience. Learned alot of things from that tractor....

Oil Bath Air Filters - by Chris Pratt. Some of us grew up thinking that an air filter was a paper thing that allowed air to pass while trapping dirt particles of a particles of a certain size. What a surprise to open up your first old tractor's air filter case and find a can that appears to be filled with the scrap metal swept from around a machine shop metal lathe. To top that off, you have a cup with oil in it ("why would you want to lubricate your carburetor?"). On closer examination (and some reading in a AC D-14 service manual), I found out that this is a pretty ingenious method of cleaning the air in the tractor's intake tract.
