The JDs and the IHs were pretty evenly matched but unfortaunately Mcaffrey had to order "Hell for stout or else" and failed to do proper testing on the 460/560 which led to serious final drive problems , which in turn tarnished the farmall name and led to the down fall of the company In about 1973, IH phased the Farmalls out of production. In 1982 Archie McCardell resigned as C.E.O. of IH, and in 1984 The agriculture side of IH was bought out Tenneco.
