When the Super M had the battery backwards the lights weren't connected at all, I didn't do that until fairly recently. It did however start and run fine. The ammeter always showed discharge though. It ate batteries because lead acid batteries are not ment to be deep cycled like that. Starting is a pretty heavy draw, as you've seen on your ammeter. I suspect you're going to need a new battery and regulator before this is all over with. One thing that did happen to me was that the battery lost its polarization, and wouldn't take charge until I sparked one of the terminals with the battery charger. Then it charged and worked, before that it wouldn't start the tractor. You can boost the tractor from a 12 volt source if you're carefull. Its easier with a helper so the helper can connect and disconnect to give the battery the least amount of time under that stress. The worst problem boosting that way is that the booster cables get really hot! Don't leave them on very long!
