OK, sorry, i should have been more specific in my original post...it is a 6volt system, all original or like parts - not rebuilt or refurbished. Your idea of disconnecting the negative lead when running is a good idea - i'll give it a shot when it is running again. The tractor is currently hooked up negative-to-ground - it was like that when I got it... Besides that, the lights work as it's connected now, after a hefty 6volt charge last night. I was able to get the starter motor to kick over a few times this evening after lubing the distributor and filling the oil can on the starter unit (who knew there was such a thing?) I also was looking for the magneto to fill it's oil cans, but couldn't locate them - this will sound dumb, but does the 140 have a magneto? I understand it is optional on some tractors. I'm curious...when your battery was hooked up backwards, the lights, etc ran ok? WHen you say it ate batteries, you mean that they would rapidly lose their recharge ability? This may be what's happening to my 140. THanks in advance... Pete in PA
