On the 52R, if it didn't have PTO drive from the tractor IH used either a Continental Y-69 flathead 4 cylinder or later they used a Farmall Cub engine for power. They were connected to an over-center clutch which had a very short shaft connected to the gearbox on the combine. The engines were officially attachments and you could easily convert back and forth between a PTO drive or an engine drive. Shown is a pic of my Continental-equipped 52R. If you look close you can see the clutch and the shifter lever coming out of it and connected to the control rod going up to the rear of the tractor. When you engage the clutch, there is a linkage on the other side connected to the governor linkage on the engine to give it full throttle. I also have a Cub driven model too. Setup is similar there. I think the 76 combine used the C-123 engine, the late 64 might have used it too. Al

Oil Bath Air Filters - by Chris Pratt. Some of us grew up thinking that an air filter was a paper thing that allowed air to pass while trapping dirt particles of a particles of a certain size. What a surprise to open up your first old tractor's air filter case and find a can that appears to be filled with the scrap metal swept from around a machine shop metal lathe. To top that off, you have a cup with oil in it ("why would you want to lubricate your carburetor?"). On closer examination (and some reading in a AC D-14 service manual), I found out that this is a pretty ingenious method of cleaning the air in the tractor's intake tract.
