Gen Problem

I was here before but still need help. Have a340 new 6volt batt, good gen, new reg, was charging but after sitting along time now won't charge. How do I polarize the gen? I used to close the contact in the reg by hand and it would be ok but now when I did that it went discharg instead. any advice? Thanks
