Dan,

Try pulling the pump out and turning it a full turn and lining up the marks again. I put a pump on our 966 it did the same thing. The book said to line up the pointer and try starting if the engine will not start turn a full turn and try again and it worked.
The pump gear turns the same speed as the crankshaft and it must be geared down inside the pump itself. I hope this helps.
