Lamont, The subject of SM and SMTA ....LPs are a fussy subject. First let me back up and say There are NO factory LP Ms. Now On the subject of SMs. There are 4 stages of the SM series according to Guy Fays book. The Stage I SMs were only fueled in Gas and Diesel from the factory. The Stage II SMs were the first to have Factory LP with the crosswise tank as Harold H. said! Now here is were the gray area starts........ The Stage III SMs.....A K A .....SMTA w/LPTO Wheather fueled by Gas,Diesel, LP From the factory Gas, Diesel & 500 LPs with Hi Alt engines. 2500 & 5000 ft models. These 500 SMTAs were outsourced to another company. The tanks were Longwise tanks with a mono valve At the 11:00 position @ the rear of tank. These tractors have the correct serial #s and Head casting #s. There is some consensus that the 500 LP SMTA were prototypes of the Stage IV LP Stage IV SMTA.....A K A .....Farmall 400 LP Hope this helps. John A.
