Does this sound like a plugged line

I am in the process of trying to get a MD to run on diesel. Last night while it was running on gas I unscrewed the main tank cap to see how much fuel was in the tank, there was pressure in the tank and forced the cap out of my hand. Prior to this I changed the filters and drained all the fuel from the tank through the water trap area. Upon reassembling the only way fuel flowed at a constant flow to the water trap was when I cracked the bleeders on top of the fuel filter canisters, the FIN filter bled out first then the AUX. I guess my question is how does the fuel flow through the system, starting at the line that has the shutoff valve by the tank? What I am starting to suspect is that the fuel is backfilling the system through the return line, allowing it to run for a very short period on start up, although the wierd thing is that I can bleed fuel out by the injectors and it will shoot a stream of fuel about a foot. I don't want to spend the money on a fuel pump if it is something simple.
