Old, I was using a tractor that had clutch problems and there were two things that were syptomatic, one the gears always ground a little when you shifted into gear and two, the shifter lever never allowed the gears to disengage and you had to pull hard to pull it out of gear. I'm guessing that if your tractor has been sitting for some time a few good runs may help then I would check the finger adjustments , then the actual clutch adjustment, but from what you said I'm guessing clutch . The shifter could be rusted inside or the pins on which the gears slide but that is less likely than clutch....good luck, from Mike in Exeter Ontario
