Rear crankshaft seal

Looked for this in the archives and got conflicting answers. On a Super H or similar, do you soak the felt seal in oil first or install dry? I just dipped mine in oil (no soak) and installed it. It leaks. The leak may be insignificant as far as oil loss, but it is more than I like. I've also read to install the two halves of the seal so that they don't match the two halves of the retainer (one end lower than the other). Is it possible that my present leak is not from the felt seal, but from the horizontal "rear oil seal retainer plate gasket" that extends into the oil pan. I could probably replace that without splitting the tractor -- again. Any suggestions for preventing leaks will be appreciated.
