Allan - I encountered similar problems when I replaced badly worn rear tires on my SM with new ones. When I put on the tire chains, the cross chains would drop between the deep tread lugs on the new tires. This made the chains pretty much ineffective. Solution was to buy a bunch of repair links the same size as the cross chains. Used a pair of repair links to connect each adjacent pair of cross chains in the middle. Now instead of a the cross chains forming a parallel or "ladder" pattern across the tire, each pair of cross chains makes a kind of an "X". This makes the cross chains ride on top of the tire lugs. The chains now ride rougher on a hard surface (packed snow/ice), but they also now grip like they should!
