M overhaul?

I have an M that I picked up for $1,000 four years ago along with a Model 31 (I think) sickle mower. I use it to cut about 80 acres of hay. Last year the M lost compression and it turned out that a retaining nut had came off of one of the valve springs. I replaced it and the compression returned but the tractor still smokes pretty bad. Not sure what the problem is. My uncle says that it may have a cracked ring. Would it still run decent if that were true. I am thinking of rebuilding it unless you guys can help me solve this problem. Thanks alot for you help!
