Ron, Either setup will work. Its generally cheaper to buy an alternator with the conventional three wire setup than the "self exciting" one wire setup. You can get a 10SI Delco Remy alternator cheap from most auto parts stores. One of three wires is just a short wire that runs back into the alternator itself from the plug, so actually you're only saving one long wire that you don't have to run from the alternator to the dash of the tractor. For the extra $20 or $30 they want for a one wire alternator, I don't think its really worth it.
