If you're talking about a loud bang out the muffler upon shutdown, it's from unburned fuel that's dumped into the exhaust manifold as the motor spins down after you kill the ignition. The hot manifold ignites the fuel and results a shotgun-like blast - often delayed until a second or two after the engine stops turning. Other than the shock value to the operator and anyone standing nearby it's pretty much harmless. You can minimize/eliminate the backfire by letting the motor idle for a couple minutes to cool the manifold before shutting down, then idle it as slow as possible before hitting the switch.
