Most pistons are marked front or have an arrow on them pointing front. The dome of the piston must match so it can go into the head chamber. You can machine top of piston if it hits, it will hit the edge of the flat part of the head. I have done this more than once on an "M", should be the same procedure on the "H". With a "300" gas head you may be OK, the straight edge of the combustion chanber will be beveled.
