You've got a good point there. These tractors have, in general, much looser tolerances than the engines of today. So in theory you could use a much thicker oil and get away with it. The problem I can think of is that the oil galeries(sp) are much more likely to be clogged and that thicker oil might have a tougher time getting through. So maybe you'd like to run a thinner oil, but maybe that old worn oil pump can't pump the thinner oil.. BLAST! How can something so simple get so complex. We had an old Ariens 3 hp snowblower that was getting pretty tired, had a hard time starting and then just didn't have the OOMPH to throw snow over the wall around the driveway any more. Well one day it was bitterly cold, -20 or so, and Dad couldn't get his car out of the yard. He called me out to run the snowblower. It wouldn't start, so we took it into the house and sat on the kitchen floor with the heat gun warming it up. While it was warming I thought I'd change the oil. Maybe warm oil would help. When I was looking at our oil supply I noticed the "marvel mystery oil". I said "what the heck, if I don't run I'd have to shovel anyhow." and put it in. It ran GREAT! that light oil seemed to breathe new life into that tired old engine. It worked better than ever before. When it got warmer I drained a little of the MMO off and added 20w motor oil so it would have some more thickness, but what a difference.
