The compression ratio on the gas start diesels is only 15 or 16 to one on the diesel side. This is not enough to do a direct start with any kind of dependablity at all. For that you need 20 to 1 compression or more. For the lower compression, some kind of assistance is needed, such as extended pulling, ether, or glow plugs. Not a good idea to use ether on these, but they can be started that way. I doubt you could ever get a strong enough starter to crank them directly from a battery without the ether.
