The first thing I would do is get a second opinion. It is not surprising that it might need valves and seats, and probably valve guides as well, but did they tell you that they could not do a simple valve job? They may be trying to sell you a bunch of stuff that you do not need, and they may have just been telling you what it would cost if everything needed replaced. As far as the crack goes, most of these old heads have cracks in them, but often times the crack is in an area where it won't hurt anything, did they confirm that the crack was causing a leak?
