From what I've read these engines never got high marks for starting real well. The 154 might
start a bit better with 23:1 compression vs 21:1 for BD144. All components of the starting system must be in top condition. Glow plug circuit must be in top condition. A lot of these engines are far from new so compression is probably down and starting will suffer. In real cold weather a block heater is probably a good idea.
