It has been a couple of years since my IH-986 did the same thing. I am a little fuzzy about the fix, but it was in the cam-linkage under the left side of the dash! I think that a very heavy-duty spring for the cam detent broke... well maybe?!?!?! I just sold the tractor this afternoon {$8500} so I can't go look and see if I can remember the way I fixed it... but I do remember that it was in the cam-linkage!
