Your M was 6 volt positive ground originally. If you know the battery is good, the starter is either bad or locked up (they have a history of doing that). You can try rocking the tractor back and forth in high gear to see if the starter is still engaged with the ring gear. Or, loosen the starter mounting bolts to free it. Since you are running a 12 volt system, the starter may be bad now. They're tough, but won't last forever. You might need to remove the starter and have it tested and or repaired. What you're describing on the right side I'm unsure. Sounds like size-wise, it could be the coil, but the connections are not right for a coil. Can you get a picture?
