I just had my starter conk out like that a couple of weeks ago. First it wouldn't engage all the time, and sometimes it would just grind. A local shop told me they wish they had a nickle for every one they've done over the years. Anyway, they put in a new drive (an updated version, and cleaned it up. It works as good as the one in my car now. It will be money well spent to have someone rebuild it proper...gee
