49 M backfiring?

Well, I rebuilt the carb on the M while I was waiting for a new manifold to come in this week. The needle was different from the original and extended out from the seat more than the orig also so I had to adjust the float to get it back to specs. The manifold arrived today, but Carter and Gruenewald sent me a dang manifold for an H. The old manifold popped a hole in the exhaust side earlier this week. Disgusted, I quickly patched up the hole and put the old manifold back on to see how the engine ran. It fired right up but died after about 30 seconds or so each time and would backfire(fuel starvation I guess). Remembering the changes I made to the float and the suspect needle (soft tip seemed to stick also) and seat, I pulled them off and put in the old needle and seat and reset the float. It fired right up and didn't die. I set the throttle to full advance and set the main adj. and then brought it back down to idle and set the idle to 425-450 rpm and set the idle mix. When I then advanced the throttle, it popped, sputtered and shot sparks and died. I set the main back to 3 turns out and it fired right up and ran good so I left it there. It was dark out by now so I was letting it idle and it sounded like it was missing every once in a while ever so slightly. I cut off the lights and also noticed (through a small hole in the top of the manifold) a small blue puff of flame every few seconds. Is the timing off a little or what? I have a tach/dwell gauge but I'm not sure what I'm doing as far as testing/setting the dwell angle on the M. Thanks guys for the advice and for reading this long message...
