I thought cashiers checks were made out after the money was withdrawn (by the bank and put into escrow or equivalent) from the requestor's account; that way the check was guaranteed. I also thought the bank verified their authenticity before making the transaction. That's the part of scam I didn't understand - I thought the bank secured the funds before a transaction was complete. Sorry for my ignorance.
