Kevin - The live pump on my SM can easily be turned by grabbing the pump/distributor drive gear and turning it with my fingers. If you need a wrench to turn the gear, something's wrong with the pump! Sounds like perhaps one/both of the internal pump gears is a bit oversize and is being squeezed between the end plates when you tighten it down. If you're not gonna be using the hydraulics shimming the end plate out with an extra gasket (or two...) should do the trick.
