Well, as you already know, a wristpin knock has a sound like a rattlesnake; once you hear it, you never forget it.

Trouble is, this noise will not come and go; when it is there, it's there until it cracks the piston, damages the head, cylinder wall or is repaired.

If the noise is coming and going in a gasser, perhaps it is carbon buildup? Kinda has the same sound, but not as drastic.
