46 h wont crank

I just purchased a 1946 Farmall H. I'm a rookie when it comes to working on tractors, and have already learned a wealth of information from this great site! Well, I decided to try and improve the slow cranking of the 6 volt system before converting to 12 volt. The ole H always starts, but cranks very slowly. I changed the battery ground cable, battery to switch cable, and switch to starter cable with 1 gauge cable. I also changed the push button starter switch. I was excited and thought it would spin to life much improved. I was wrong. In fact it doesn't do anything - not even a click. So I put all the old stuff back on and still nothing. I'm suspecting the starter, but does anyone have any ideas on something else I may be over looking before I take the starter in and have it tested? The battery is fresh, all connections appear to be good. Thanks!
