Always start with the ignition and fuel system. When they are as good as possible, the mechanical condition of the engine can be evaluated. Even a mechanically perfect engine will do poorly with bad ignition or fuel system. I bought a Cub that barely ran, would not even pull itself onto the trailer. Had to use come-along. But turning with the handcrank convinced me that the engine was really in good shape, good compression on each cylinder. After the fuel and ignition tuneup, it is the best running Cub I have ever owned. Owned them since 1953, all purchased used.
