Check the link below. Click on "Blue Ribbon Service Manuals" and you'll find a service manual for magnetos. I don't think the J-4 is specifically covered, but there is enough there to help you through it.
For parts, try magnetoparts.com He has the coil for the J-4 mag. That is your most likely problem unless the magnets are weak.
