GS, The 966 had wet sleeves, and one of the problems was cavitation, (small pin holes in the sleeves) The filter was an add on feature that owners attached to minimize the problem. Be glad that your brother's had the filter added as it added many hours to the life of the engine before overhaul. Cavitation, in fact was one of the very few problems that the 966 had. It was otherwise one of the best tractors IH built.
