Theman is correct about the vent tube as he described it, but are you talking about the "draft tube", that attaches to the plate that covers the push rods (on the block)? I think some smoke from there, or even a little oil, is normal, but I don't know how much is too much. All H's and M's vibrate some, but I have not had the particular problem you have, perhaps the U-joint is bad and for some reason the vibration is transmitted only to the rear. The bearing on the steering post that the steering shaft goes thru could be worn also, as could the shaft itself. I don't suppose the three bolts that hold the post on the transmission cover are loose? But, you've had all that loose to get the transmission cover off.
