My 1942 Farmall H has the 1 1/8" dia. PTO shaft, and to my misfortune, after taking off the overrunning coupler, the shaft is in real bad shape, the splines are only half as wide as they should be, I've picked up a new(er) shaft from another H that is 1 3/8" in dia., but the bolt pattern is differant on the housings. They are both the flat style housing, not the style that sticks out 4-6". I was wondering if I can just switch shafts and put the new one into the presant housing, or do I need to mark and drill and tap new holes into the new housing. Also, I would think either shaft would fit into the gears at the front of the rearend/ back of the trans. If you can help, please reply as this is my only tractor right now and i need it to cut rake and bale hay, Thanks for your time and info.
