dry clutch TA question

I am going to drive 400 miles to look at a 560 and I want to know about the old type TA's. Do I check it like a newer one,pull the engine down with the brakes while in low range?Or is there a better way? I have never been around the old type TA so I guess it is new to me . Are the old ones like the newer hydraulic ones,does it free wheel downhill in low? Does it hurt it to run for very long in low?
