I always use Lubriplate whenever I do a rebuild. It's like a white grease, and it stays where you put it, so if your rebuild takes several weeks, months or even years, you don't have to worry about priming the system to get it oiled. I coat everything with it, and I also pack the oil pump with it. As soon as the pump turns, it is primed and sucking oil, and the oil easily flushes the lubriplate out of the gears.

On engines where the oil pump is driven by a shaft from the distributor, I always give the pump a few spins with a homemade shaft and electric drill. That is also a good way to check for leaks before the initial start-up.
