Yes, that is normal. Our 686 with the 310 was just like that. The German engines seem to get a little oil past the valve guides and into the manifold, which seems to cause smoke at idle, since the manifold is cold and dosen't burn the oil off cleanly. Look at another German engine that idles a lot. You'll probably see that the area below the manifold is totally black with oil. The other part of it is that the German engines had low compression. 706-686 have 15:1 pistons. 786-3288 have 16:1 pistons. This also makes a huge difference in cold weather starting.
