The blue does look really smart and is worth doing.
Rust i use a 10: water and molasses. Stinks a bit but is cheap and does the job. Need to leave thinks soaking about a week.
For the right blue colour there are bound to be someone close who can give a piece painted on some card or the colour code. (I am in New Zealand so our codes mean nothing (+ vice versa)
Have a look at www.shsw.com I think Sate Hist soc of Wisconcin and the mcCormick collection. They have teh paint committee decisions and you can see the memos detailing what parts were painted what coloyur. Interesting reading.
