IH 454 Clutch replacement

IH 454 Gas. I only have clutch response
in the last 1" to 2" before the pedal hits the foot plate. Possibly throwout bearing, but will
probably replace the clutch and pressure plate
while I'm in there. It makes a grinding noise when fully depressed. The clutch
doesn't slip however, and the tractor runs/pulls
great when running under load. The problem is only when
engaging clutch to stop, shift gears, or reverse.

What kind of job will I be getting into ?
I see several mentions of doing a "split", which
I assume is spliting the transmission from engine.
Never attempted something this complex on a tractor. Any words of wisdom are welcome !!!
