I had s similar noise in my H for several years. It would come and go. I thought for a long time it was a valve , but adjusting them never changed the noise. Well, about a year ago I found the noise. I was mowing hay and suddenly heard the worst kind of clanging and banging and the motor began skipping. I dropped the oil pan and it was full of metal. The noise was from a sleeve that was loose and jumping up and down. It sounded like a hammer tapping inside the motor. The H had been overhauled not long before I got it so I just rebuilt the one cylinder with a one cylinder rebuild kit. Now I have no tapping and the H runs great with no loss of power.
