I dont' know if this is the problem or not, but I remember my dad's H started knocking all of a sudden. We pulled the oil pan and couldn't find any problem there. Then we discovered what the problem was. The screw that holds the choke plate in the carburetor came out and was sucked into the engine. That little brass screw was hammering between the piston and the head. I took the spark plugs out and found which cylinder had the screw in it. It then just took a screw driver with some grease on it and picked up the screw throught the spark plug hole (that's what is nice about big spark plugs). It ran for years after that with no problems.
