Dan: The shaft that goes from shift lever through the shifting linkages has a pin through it that protrudes about 1/4 inch on either side of shaft. That pin as you move lever from side to side, lines up with each of the 3 shift linkages. This becomes worn and pin gets loose, then it protrudes too far on one side, thus you can't change from one of the 3 linkages to the next. Next step is the pin falls out then you can't shift anything. There is a kit you can buy from CaseIH to repair this. Not exactly sure just what the kit contains. When I did mine IH had not yet developed the kit thus I had to buy from parts. I replaced the shaft from shift lever through the linkages plus the pin that goes through it. That was 30 years ago and it happened at about 6,000 hours on tractor. 15 minute job to change it with quite simple tools. At each linkage there is a hole you line pin to, and drive it out with punch, pull the old shaft. Replace with new shaft line it up for pin replacment and put new pin back. It may take a bit of trial and error to get pin centered.
