504 wont start after head repalcement-HELP PLEASE!

just replaced the head on my 504 gas it was cracked and had 2 bad valves.So found good used head put new guides,all valves, ground seats.torqued to 88lbs new head set new water pump themostat,hoses etc.It had run before the head replacement with the carb I rebuilt and put on it
At first I would get a nasty backfire,still wouldnt run,reset valve clearance-rechecked about 6 times,not even any smoke now,plugs are firing,carb is getting gas-still wont start what am I missing??
ANY HELP WOULD BE APPRECIATED-THANKS IN ADVANCE
