Jack, It sounds like your problem is in the equalizer valve. I just repaired mine on my 684, which has the same system. There is no way to bypass the equalizer valve that I know of. It is kind of a pain to get at easily. I took my battery out and also removed the battery tray to give more space to work. The repair kit consists of a small seal and some steel balls and tiny springs. These appear to be worth about a dollar or two, however you can buy them from your Case-IH dealer for the tidy sum of about $38. I don't know of any aftermarket source. Be very careful when removing the old seal as the equalizer valve body breaks real easy (found out the hard way).
